Crystals to Empower your Yoga Practice

Adding crystals and gemstones to your yoga practice is an easy and fun way to boost the effectiveness of your practice. In yogi lore, crystals have been valued for their healing powers on the mind, body and soul – as well as their beauty! They are seen as powerful symbols of inner light and representations of hidden beauty, with magic powers… Smaller stones are the most accessible and affordable for many people, and they don’t compromise on abundance and power. If you like their effects, you might want to invest in larger crystals to display in your home.

There are many ways to use gemstones and crystals in your practice. You can place them around your yoga mat or meditation cushion, in a grid pattern or just on top of your mat. You can also try placing a few on a windowsill or table nearby your yoga space – they will remind you during the practice to focus on your stones. Whilst you meditate, focus on one stone, and the healing properties it brings. You can also add crystals to your body, in the form of a strong of crystal mala beads or placing them on your body during savasana.

If you’re sceptical about the healing power of stones, then read on to learn about the different types of crystals and what they can add to your practice. After all, what have you got to lose by trying it out?

Fluorite

Fluorite can be used to achieve greater focus and concentration. It’s a protective stone that promotes grounding, concentration, and removes negative thought patterns.

“It helps the ‘monkey mind’ to focus!” says Travis Hudson, a mindfulness writer at Study demic and Revieweal “Fluorite can help overcome chaos, restlessness and illusions in the mind.”

Rose Quartz

This pink gem is the stone of love – it will help you uncover self-love, compassion, and also attract greater love into your life. Using this stone in your practice will see you become more tolerant and accepting, bring you peace, heal old pains and open your heart again.

Use this stone to raise your self-esteem by loving yourself, and to remove guilt. Combined with open heart back-bends and compassion focused meditations, this stone is very powerful.

Moonstone

This stone is soft and feminine, helping you to increase your intuition, wisdom and sensitivity (all the traditionally ‘feminine’ traits!). Using the moonstone, you will begin to listen to your intuition or ‘gut feeling’ much more and trust your own judgement. Sensitivity to others around you will also increase, making you more of an empath than before.

This stone will also protect you during challenging times as you will learn to listen to yourself and your own inner voice, and the wisdom that brings. This will help you calm overreactions, anxiety, and tension caused by emotional stress. Add this stone to your practice space and begin channeling the energy of the moon in your mind and soul.

Amethyst

This purple gemstone is the stone of peace and stability – it will bring you inner peace, clarity, patience and strength. It opens and activates the crown chakra, helping to purify the mind from negative thoughts. Yogi experts say the stone is a healing stone – it creates balance in yourself and stabilizes your emotions.

Citrine

Citrine is known for success – it’s related to abundance, prosperity, and joy.
“Adding this stone to your practice will bring you light-heartedness, happiness and peace, inspiring optimist and enhancing your creativity so that you can achieve those goals you have always wanted to!” Says Marilyn Lawson, a blogger at Boom essays and Academized.

Meditating with the stone will allow you to harness the power of citrine = warmth, clarity, inspiration and abundance.

Hematite

Hematite is a protective stone that works by activating your root chakra to help you remain grounded. It’s a powerful stone that absorbs your negative energy and will reduce stress and worry by taking these emotions away from you. In return, your concentration and confidence will increase.

Black Tourmaline

This stone is also known for its protective properties, pushing away negativity and purifying your energy. Like hematite, it promotes positivity and cleanses you of self-doubt, anxiety and stress. It will also promote physical healing.
