Wiccans, Pagans and Magick

Wiccans, Pagans and Magick

There are so many people who get Wicca and Paganism mixed up... and with good reason. In this article, we'll take a look at why that is and look at some of the common misconceptions.

Paganism is an umbrella term that covers Wicca (and a bunch of other things). Paganism refers to any nature-based or earth-based religion, which is what Wicca is. So it is safe to say that Wicca IS Paganism. Therefore, if you are a practicing Wiccan, then you ARE a pagan, but don't forget that not all pagans are Wiccans.

Many think that if you practice witchcraft, then you are automatically a Wicca practitioner (because Wiccans do witchcraft). But there are so many other people who also practice witchcraft, but have other religious beliefs...

...and there are also plenty of those who doesn't follow any particular religion.

So, what makes a Wiccan?

As Wiccans, it is a pre-requisite for you to believe in the Wicca religion. You live by the Wiccan moral code, the Wiccan Rede, which stresses not doing harm unto anyone, lest you want it to come back to you three-fold.

And maybe, you are even wearing Wiccan jewelry (like the Pentacle, a Goddess necklace or something else)

As a Wiccan, you are guided by the belief that there are three main sources of energy: your personal power, the earth power, and the divine power.

Wicca and Magick

The mind is very powerful. Powerful enough to affect the world.

One characteristic that makes a full-fledged Wiccan is the practice of magick (the extra K is there to differentiate the practice from those that magicians and illusionists perform).

Magick, to Wiccans, is a force that combines psychic energy (which is abundant inside each and every one), and the power of the will to produce supernatural effects.

One type of magick that Wiccans commonly practice is the casting of spells. The spells that Wiccans do are highly spiritual and usually done within a ritual. It often involves cauldrons, crystals, stones, elixirs and spellbooks, all of which are used to direct energies.

The magick that Wiccans perform do not defy the laws of physics. You cannot get more than what you put in. It is not like anything you see in the movies. This practice has its roots in increasing the flow of divinity. And how it works depends largely on how much you believe in it.

Summary:

  • All Wiccans are Pagans, but not all Pagans are Wiccans
  • Wiccans do Witchcraft, but you don't have to be a Wiccan to do Witchcraft
  • Magic and Magick are NOT the same
  • Magick doesn't defy the laws of physics (we just try to bend them a little ;)

Thanks a lot for reading. I would really love to hear your comments and questions. If nothing else, just say hi. I'd really appreciate it :)
